A cellphone echos from upstairs this wildly annoying tune at 7 am. Heavy slow steps enter another room, followed by plummeting children in a mad dash down the stairs. "Are the puppies here?!" I respond "Not yet but very soon." I have been up for 3 days with Lily awaiting her litter. Checking her temperature and behavior, staring into her forever sad puppy eyes ( she isn't sad-just blessed with a face to get whatever she wants.) My children are excited for their first day of school that day hurriedly getting ready. I continued to still by Lily's side feeling instinctively the puppies were about to arrive. The plan for the first day of school was that my husband and I would split taking my eldest son to his middle school and the youngest to grade school. Both schools have different start times and opening school year events.
Now all the planning and prepping can be done to prepare for these events. School cloths in order, shoes, backpacks, light jacket, bathroom routine, hair done, all to the T. Preparation for the puppies all lined up for everything and anything plus a large cat mascot who kept the moral up by messing up all my paperwork.
My children were completely ready for the day 7:30 am. My youngest sat on the chair next to the whelping area and began asking questions. They were asking how it looked like when the puppies come out. What color are they going to be. Questions you would expect a Kindergartner and First Grader to ask. Mid ask me 100 question time, Lily begins having her first pup, Groot. She was struggling to push him completely out, I had no choice but to assist her with the first puppy. I had to reach it and shimmy that big boy out, the huge relief it gave her was lifted. My children were watching, all questions answered. I turned and told my husband "Whelp, looks like you're taking them to school solo today."
